Growing in Sensitivity to Holy Spirit in Dance Ministry

Christ Center for Dance

In the realm of liturgical dance, sensitivity to Holy Spirit is not just a skill—it is a necessity. Our movements are not mere expressions of artistry but vessels that carry divine messages to the congregation. As we dance, we must be attuned to the leading of Holy Spirit, allowing Him to direct our steps so that our ministry aligns with the heart of God.

Defining Sensitivity

To be "sensitive" means to be keenly aware and responsive. In the spiritual context, sensitivity to Holy Spirit means being able to discern His voice, guidance, and promptings. It requires an open heart, an attentive spirit, and a willingness to surrender to His direction.

The Greek word aisthētērion (αἰσθητήριον) found in Hebrews 5:14 speaks of the "senses" being trained to distinguish between good and evil. This concept applies to our spiritual sensitivity as dancers—we must cultivate our ability to perceive what the Spirit is doing in a moment and move accordingly.

Why Sensitivity to Holy Spirit Matters

  1. To Minister Effectively – Our dance is an act of intercession and worship. When we are sensitive to the Spirit, we are able to release movements that heal, deliver, and usher in God’s presence. "The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit and life" (John 6:63, NIV). Likewise, our movements must be Spirit-filled to bring life to those who witness them.

  2. To Remain in Alignment with God’s Will – Holy Spirit knows exactly what is needed in a moment of worship. By staying sensitive, we avoid moving in our own strength or preference and instead allow God to use us as vessels for His glory. "For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God" (Romans 8:14, NIV).

  3. To Discern the Atmosphere – Worship atmospheres can shift unexpectedly. Sensitivity to Holy Spirit allows us to recognize when to move, when to pause, when to shift in choreography, and when to yield to stillness. This ensures that we remain in tune with what God is doing in the room.

How to Cultivate Sensitivity to Holy Spirit

  1. Prayer and Intimacy with God – A deep relationship with Holy Spirit is built through prayer. Spend time communing with Him daily, asking for fresh anointing and discernment in your ministry.

  2. Study and Meditate on Scripture – The Word of God sharpens our ability to recognize His voice. "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path" (Psalm 119:105, NIV). Scripture equips us to move with understanding and authority.

  3. Live a Life of Worship – Worship is more than what we do on stage—it is a lifestyle. When we cultivate a heart of worship, we remain sensitive to the Spirit’s leading both in and out of dance.

  4. Practice Stillness and Listening – Before dancing, take moments to be still in His presence. "Be still, and know that I am God" (Psalm 46:10, NIV). This allows the Spirit to speak and direct our movements.

  5. Obey Promptings Without Hesitation – Sometimes, Holy Spirit will lead us to move in unexpected ways. Sensitivity requires immediate obedience, trusting that He is orchestrating something beyond what we can see.

Conclusion

Sensitivity to Holy Spirit is the foundation of prophetic and liturgical dance. Without it, we risk dancing from the flesh rather than from the Spirit. As we grow in prayer, worship, and study of the Word, we will become more attuned to the Spirit’s guidance, ensuring that every movement carries divine impact. May our dance always be an offering that flows from His leading, touching hearts and glorifying the Father.
